Brent Canup

Board Candidate for 2018

I was born and raised in Novi. I attended Novi High School and graduated in 1984. After Graduation, I attended college in Muskegon where I earned my degree in Business.  I then moved back to the Novi area and began an environmental waste water company, Midwest Power Systems, with my father, Brent Canup Sr.  Midwest Power Systems has been in business now for 34 years and I have been the president for the past 15 years.  I married my wife Ginger in 1988 and we recently celebrated our 30th anniversary this last October.  We have lived in Milford for 30 years and raised two daughters.  Our oldest, Morgan, is 28 and lives in Brighton with her husband, Corey.  Our youngest, Margaux, is 25 and lives in Grosse Pointe Woods. Both girls also became members a few years back, making us the first ever 4th generation family at the club.

I began coming to the Huron River Club when I was a young boy, being that my grandfather, Leo Harrawood, and Father, Brent Canup Sr., were members.  After years of activity at the club, I became a member.  With the memories that our family have built at the club throughout the years at family dinners, New Year’s Eve parties and celebrating special milestones, I realized the importance of becoming even more involved within the club.  Running for the board means to be able to ensure that the traditions and memories we have all created at the club are continued and available for generations to come.

Board Candidate for 2018

I’ve been a member of the Club for more than nine years, during which time my husband, Tim, and I have enjoyed countless memorable evenings with friends, colleagues and family members.  We particularly love the Friday Flips, the President’s Ball, the Halloween parties and New Year’s Eve, although some of our most cherished memories are of quiet dinners alone or with friends.  From a professional standpoint, my firm has found the Club to be an outstanding venue for hosting events.  I love being able to bring guests to a place that is unique in its history and décor, and second to none in the quality of its food and warmth of its service.

I’m a partner at Wright Beamer law firm in Farmington Hills, where I’ve happily practiced for 26 years.  My primary areas of practice are estate planning and business law.  During my career, I have created and advised dozens of nonprofit organizations and have served on a wide variety of boards.  It would be my great privilege to now serve on the Board of the Club as well!

I would bring to the Board a wealth of experience in professional and volunteer service.  I’m relational and collaborative in my management style, which can be an invaluable asset. I deeply value our rich traditions, yet I understand the necessity of attracting new members if our Club is to thrive.  I’d like to see the Board continue and expand its efforts to brand and market the Club.  I’d like to explore new ways to help members connect with one another, such as adding headshots to our member directory. I’d like us to update our website to make it more vibrant and “urban” – while still reflecting our roots.  I’m excited about the possibilities ahead, and I’m ready to tackle the challenges!

Board Candidate for 2018

I have been an active member of the Huron River Club for 32 years.  The Club’s history and traditions attracted me to the Club in 1986 and are the reasons for my continued membership.  I am proud of our Club and would be honored to serve on the Board of Directors.  If elected to the Board, I will work hard to continue those traditions while remaining open to new ideas that will promote the Club’s reputation and ensure its prosperity.

I am currently the Northville Township Supervisor.  As Supervisor, I am primarily responsible for the administration of Northville Township including, economic development and the budget.  I am also Vice-Chairman of the conference of mayors and supervisors of the Western Wayne County communities, Chairman of the Western Townships Utility Authority and Vice-Chairman of the Schoolcraft College Development Authority.  Before being elected Township Supervisor, I was a partner with the Detroit law firm of Kerr Russell and Weber where I practice in the areas of business and real estate law for 40 years.

As a member of the Club, I have helped plan the Annual Car Show. My wife Sue and I are active in various church and community activities as well.  We have lived in Northville since 1977 and have two grown children and three grandchildren.
